the most up-to-date marketing strategies
that actually work
Why most photographers and artists make it
much harder than it needs to be.
To sell fine art photography, where the print fulfillment is automated, is a dream...but how do I market myself and really grow sales?
There are photographers and artists selling $100k+/year of their fine art. There are also others that earn substantial side income from it.
For example:
Photographer Bill Wensel sold 74 prints last fourth quarter alone, which amounted to over $20,000 in sales.
John Martell sold $45,000 of fine art in the same time period.
And photographer John Lechner recently TRIPLED his sales year over year, and is generating income in the high 5-figures.
What they are doing -- and what they have done -- is not rocket science. What you will find, is that their approach is extremely logical.
So logical, that when you learn what 99.9% of the rest of the industry is doing, you will be left scratching your head.
So let's start there.
Let's quickly summarize what most art-sellers are doing wrong.
Now, is it really a surprise that these people are having trouble selling art?
No. It is no surprise all - they are not equipping themselves with the right tools for the job they want to get done.
For example - if you want to sell fine art from your website, use a tool that is specifically built to do that.
Not a generic website that is used by the masses to sell things like barbecue parts. Nor a portfolio website which is meant to showcase images but not sell them as fine art.
So, the website is one big problem. The other big problem is marketing.
When it comes to marketing, photographers and artists should follow tactics and strategies that are working for other photographers and artists who are already doing what you want to do.
This is a very logical, time effective approach to take.
This is precisely what 99.9% of photographers and artists have missed. Just take a look around, and talk to a few of them, and you can confirm it for yourself.
And that brings us back to those successful people we mentioned above. They ARE doing what is logical. And that is why it is working for them.
Now -- if you just did both of these things, you would immediately go from ill-equipped to properly equipped. You would be positioned in the 0.1% rather than the 99.9%.
OK - so now that you know what is separating the successful photographers and artists from the 99.9%, let's dive into the (1) website problem, and (2) marketing problem, a little further.
A proper art gallery website is one that is equipped with all the must-have art-selling features to sell art online, and will therefore convert the maximum number of your site visitors into leads and buyers.
As you can see in the image above, it is specifically built for selling art. As such, it does a good job at selling more art!
For example, a feature such as Augmented Reality allows buyers to actually try the art on their wall before buying it using their mobile phone.
How well do features like these work? Ask photographer John Lechner, who tripled his art sales and was written up by a local newspaper.
There are many more important features that are integral to the art buying process. The important point to understand right now is that every bit of traffic you get from your marketing efforts is precious, and it must be capitalized on. You cannot let your traffic go to waste, because people just look around but never buy.
It is simply amazing what can happen when you equip yourself with the right tools for the job. You wouldn't build a photography business using an old flip phone camera. You wouldn't dig a swimming pool using a spoon.
If you are serious at all about making money from your art, you need to start with a proper art gallery website first.
When you have the right marketing strategy paired with a proper art gallery website, this is when your growth potential becomes near limitless.
Marketing is how you will get more eyeballs to see your art. Marketing is what will grow your audience, nurture them, bring them to their first purchase, and thereafter to repeat purchases.
So how should you approach marketing?
As we said earlier, this is not rocket science either.
You simply need to learn and follow what other successful photographers and artists have done, and are doing on a regular basis when it comes to marketing.
You don't need to reinvent the wheel. You don't need to spend your time researching and/or testing tactics on your own. It's already been done.
You just need to get into the know of what is working, and plug into it.
If you go it alone, and try to do everything yourself, it will be very tough. It also just doesn't make sense. Why would you do that when the other way -- the logical way -- is totally doable?
You wouldn't.
But take a look around, and almost everywhere you will see artists going it alone, trying to sell their art with a website that was not designed for it.
They waste so much time and frustration doing the wrong things, and usually give up BEFORE giving their art a real shot. It happens all the time and it is a shame. They usually end up blaming themselves or their talent, when the truth is, they never even gave it a real shot.
But now you know what to do. You also know what NOT to do. You are empowered to take the correct approach, avoid these pitfalls, and reach success faster.
